How we picked

This guide draws from a pool of 20 dual fuel generator listings, filtered by the group rule: a title that says dual fuel, or names gasoline and propane, or propane and natural gas. Standby, inverter and portable titles are all included. Picks are ordered by how many of the six stated detail types a title carries (kind, fuel, watts group, electric start, RV ready, CO sensor), most first, then by the order of the pool. Where two titles state the same number of details, the earlier pool entry ranks higher. Every pick is compared on the details stated in its listing title and on the live price printed beside it. No product was started, run, loaded or measured for this guide.

How to choose

Dual fuel in a listing title

A title that says dual fuel, or names gasoline and propane, or propane and natural gas, states the two fuels the unit can use. The EIA pages in Sources explain what natural gas and other fuels are. This guide never says which fuel is easier to find or lasts longer after a storm.

Starting watts, running watts and watt groups

The first power figure a title states is often the starting (peak) figure. The running figure is lower and printed on the maker's page. This guide groups the title's first figure into Under 3,000 W, 3,000 to 5,000 W, 5,001 to 9,000 W and Over 9,000 W, exactly as the title states.

Inverter, portable and standby types

The title names the machine type. A standby title means a permanently installed unit, and installation is for a licensed electrician, the maker and the local permit office. An inverter or portable title means a movable unit. This guide never says one type is quieter or safer; noise and safety figures are on the maker's page.

A fridge and fans: reading labels before you buy

Read the running and starting watts on each appliance label and the maker's page, then compare them with what the listing title states. A title's first watt figure may be a starting figure, so the running figure matters for continuous loads.

Who connects backup power to a house

Any connection of a standby unit or a portable unit to a home's wiring is for a licensed electrician, the maker and the local permit office. No backfeeding or DIY wiring advice appears in this guide.

What this guide leaves out (and why)

This guide does not cover runtime, noise, fuel use, tank size, weight, emissions approval or warranty terms, because the catalogue has no data for them. Read the maker's manual and the safety pages listed in Sources for those details.

Questions

Does this guide cover runtime, noise, fuel use or where to place the unit?

No. The catalogue holds no measured runtime, noise, fuel use, tank size or placement data, and this guide never promises an outcome. For those details, read the maker's manual and the CPSC, CDC and EPA pages in Sources, which cover generator placement and carbon monoxide. This guide only compares stated listing details and live prices.

How are the 15 picks ranked?

Picks are ordered by how many of the six stated detail types their titles carry: kind, fuel, watts group, electric start, RV ready and CO sensor. More stated details rank first, then the pool order. All 15 are dual fuel titles.

What does dual fuel mean in a title?

A title that says dual fuel, or names gasoline and propane, or propane and natural gas, states two fuels. The EIA pages in Sources explain what gasoline, propane and natural gas are. This guide never says one fuel is easier to get after a storm.

Why is the first watt figure not a running figure?

A listing title often prints a starting (peak) figure first. The running figure is lower and appears on the maker's page. This guide groups the first figure the title states and never supplies a running figure the title does not print.
